Yesterday we continued to refine Burning Sand and Folded Arms, working on electric and acoustic guitars and percussion. We also added ‘Pressure’ into the mix, working on guitar parts. During the first album recording sessions we more or less worked on each song until it was complete, checking them off the list as we went along. This time we’re nudging several tracks along, following the inspiration as it comes. Its feeling good so far.
we got into Hamilton late on Wednesday night, and were at Chem19 bright and slightly breezy on Thursday morning to start the third of our new recording sessions. here are some pictures of us hard at work on Burning Sand and Folded Arms….
the session also produced a breakthrough in Anglo-mexican cuisine with the invention of ‘Fajitoast’ a winning combination of mexican chicken, peppers, onions, salsa, cheese, and, well toast. a traditional take on the South American classic.
thanks to David for the heads-up on excellent iPhone app Camerabag and its interesting vintage filters!
We’ve been invited to play at the IMRO Showcase tour gig happening next Thursday 2 April at the Limelight & Katy Daly’s in Belfast. As you can see from the poster, there are a bunch of great bands playing including John Shelly & The Creatures and The Benjamins.
I’m in Austin, Texas at present, getting my ass burnt off by the sunny sun sun and generally enjoying an amazing selection of bands. Last night I saw Venice Is Sinking, An Horse and the incredible Dananananaykroyd and its only day one!
More on my adventures, and our first sessions at Chem 19 later, but for now, check out this lovely poster for a gig we’re playing on April 1st at the Spirit Store in Dundalk with John Shelly and the Creatures, Colenso Parade and The Good Fight.
We’re very excited to be back in Whelan’s this Saturday night, playing alongside our Belfast buddies Cashier No.9. Support with come from the excellent New Amusement in the form of a specially prepared acoustic performance.
Doors are at 8, and its only €8.
Stay tuned for a wee update from our first studio session in Glasgow, and some other news too!
Rory McConnell from BBC Radio 1′s Introducing show asked us to come in to the Blackstaff Studios on Monday to record some live tracks for his show. The results are here! bbc.co.uk/radio1/rorymcconnell. Being close to our new recording sessions we decided to perform two new songs in addition to Kings Have Fallen, and all three really blew us away. We should have the recordings available shortly, but for now please listen again to Rory’s show on his website. Check out the blurry picture….
The main studio at Blackstaff is like a giant hangar, but with some cunningly positioned foam boxes and a lot of curtains there’s no reverb, you could be in the cupboard under your stairs… anyway this excellent sounding room made the recording process all the more enjoyable, as did the dedication and enthusiasm of recording team Davy, John and Trish. Thanks to them and Rory and assistant Steven for having us along
After an extremely relaxing Christmas holiday, followed by various colds, flus and back to work blues…. things are getting back to normal for us. We’ve been busy in the rehearsal room, readying songs for new recording sessions starting in February, so it’s back to Chem19 for some more good times. We’ve also be honing three tracks for a live session for Rory McConnell’s Radio 1 show, taking place next week… stay tuned for details of broadcast dates!
We’re also fitting some gigs in around this, so look out for shows in Dundalk (Jan 31st), Belfast (6th & 18th Feb) and a Whelan’s show Dublin on 28th Feb, supporting the excellent Cashier No.9.
The first Belfast show mentioned above, on Friday 6th February, is actually an acoustic set at UnConvention Belfast. This is an ‘unconference’ that i’m helping to organise. For anyone interested in the development of the music industry, or making new contacts or seeking inspiration for their own music career development, UnConvention is the place to be. Check out the website at unconventionbelfast.com for details and registration! Thanks to the generosity and vision of our key sponsors at Belfast City Council Creative Industry unit, and NIMIC its free to attend too, tho places are quickly running out.
Finally, check out this video, shot by Barry Cullen of us performing ‘Burning Sand’ at our recent show at the Menagerie. cheers to Barry for putting it up there
All in all, we’re looking forward to a fun, productive and creative 2009. Thanks for listening so far!
