Hot Press award 4 out of 5

Another great review of Loosely Based On Fiction can be found in the current issue of Hot Press, awarding the album 4 out of 5…

“These are tales of trampled hearts and souls … its the stuff of all humankind. What’s rare and worth cherishing is the poetic flair with which Escape Act navigate these much weathered narratives. Their uncanny knack for creating surging, senses-filling melodies – all shuddering guitars, yearning vocals and racing beyond the speed limits rhythms – further helps illuminate their lyrical manuscript.

With more hooks than an abattoir and slab upon slab of bristling melodies, most strikingly on Corpses Candle and Kings Have Fallen, Loosely Based On Fiction is indie rock in excelsis.”

Chris also spoke to Colin Carberry a few weeks ago and the interview appears in the Hit The North column in the same issue. Colin had this to say…

“Loosely Based On Fiction – the debut album by the Belfast three-piece is as comfortable making a massive clatter as it is conjuring up sing-song melodies. On one hand, the buzz-saw guitars, brittle production, and lurches into unhinged noise would see it nestle comfortably alongside your Husker Du, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr records. On the other hand the wide-eyed choruses, smart lyrical observations, and giddy pop-sensibility means it can slip in just as easily beside Orange Juice, Franz Ferdinand and even The Jam.”

AU Review Loosely Based On Fiction – 8 out of 10!

Check out the current issue (51) of AU for a great review of the album, written by Editor and all round gentleman Francis Jones. Awarding it 8 out of 10 he writes:

“These are songs to make your inner indie boy rejoice. The debut album from Belfast’s Escape Act, Loosely Based On Fiction drips indie melodies like tears from the sainted eyes of Morrissey. It’s a beautiful, heart-bursting experience. Hearing ‘Kings Have Fallen’ is like being impaled on a shaft of sunlight, the guitar and voice racing hand-in-hand like young lovers.

Meanwhile, former single, ‘God Says’ throws a Pixies freakout before sliding into a chorus as golden sweet as a vat of honey. What’s particularly encouraging here is that these songs are as lyrically imaginative as they are tuneful; phrases are bent winningly out of shape and the vocabulary is extended into the poetic. Indeed, the later ‘Sullied Behave For The Moon’ – all coiled power and evocative atmospherics – and the obscenely catchy final one-two of ‘Corpses Candle’ and ‘Broken Chin’ suggest that this is a band deserving of a place amongst the highest echelons of Northern Irish alt. rock.”

Video Footage from Chem19

Hey folks,

We shot a lot of video whilst recording the album at Chem19 last year. This included the hard work of recording, singing, percussing, mixing the tunes, the two hour drive from Stranraer to Hamilton, the daily Evian/Picnic acquisition, cooking, eating, erm…, sitting. So we asked Steven Quinn to help us condense this down to the best bits and cut it along to Cabin Fever. We’re pretty pleased with the results!

Special Booklets In The Making

Here are some pictures of the limited edition booklets we are producing to go along with the Loosely Based On Fiction physical release, and available exclusively through our own online shop. We’ve asked our screen-printing friend Norman to print up some cardboard sleeves, using one of Alan’s design. They have our familiar arrow in black, with a cool blue overprint.

The sleeves will contain the four leaves of the ‘booklet’ that we’ll hand number before they go in the post. These leaves feature notes from the album recording sessions and more of Alan’s artwork on the reverse.

Alan has also created a PDF version which contains lyrics for each of the songs on the album. This PDF will be available to anyone who buys the album from the site.

17 Seconds releases Broken Chin

Lots of things are happening at the moment as we near the point of releasing the CDs. You’ll notice that the escapeact.com site has had a minor facelift for a start!

Earlier this week Ed over at 17 Seconds kindly released the last of our tracks – Broken Chin, head on over to read his thoughts on the album…

“Rather like the Strokes, here is a band who have realised that less is definitely more. Pure punky joy.”

We Got Albums

Yay! We’re one step closer to the album release now that we’ve received our albums back from the factory! These lovely ‘digipak’ covers really look the part! We’re working on the limited edition liner booklets at the minute – these will only be available from us here on the site and at gigs, then we’ll be ready to let loose! some pics…

Everyone Got Tuna

We’re getting near the end of our little blog release journey, but there are still a few tracks left, including a personal favourite of mine – ‘Everyone Got Shot’. It has kindly been released by Paul, aka, The Devil Has The Best Tuna, click below to check it out!

“They effortlessly straddle the jangling, punkish new wave of The Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers (‘God Says’, ‘Laid Open’ and ‘Jupiter Storms’) and the more melodic harmonies Irish Americana (Irishcana?) of The Thrills (‘Broken Chin’ and ‘Sullied Behave For The Moon’). “

CMU Unsigned Pick

I just came across this nice little mention about us on the CMU Music Network:

03.11.08: ESCAPE ACT
Belfast trio Escape Act recently completed a MUZU TV session in Dublin, though that’s not the reason we are tipping them, though it does mean we’ll be able to plug them again later in the month when the results of that session go online. But these guys definitely deserve your attention right now. Single release ‘God Says’ is a good start, though the Springsteen-aping arena stomp of ‘Cabin Fever’ is their best offering, meeting the ethereal Brit-rock of Doves with the melancholy, shoe gazing vocals of Teenage Fanclub. If this sounds like your thing then you’ve no reason not to explore, particularly given that they’re giving away their album, ‘Loosely Based On Fiction’, entirely free through various channels.
